I have been to A LOT of treatment centers - good, bad, mediocre. It's not something I necessarily advertise as an accomplishment, but I do think it qualifies this review.... read more Believe me when I say, Westwind is perhaps the best Intensive Outpatient (IOP) program I have every completed. It's well-organized, the groups are interactive, and the people truly care. When you've been in and out of treatment centers as much as I have, you get used to a tough-love ethos. You get used to being treated like a child, like you shouldn't have a say in your treatment plan, your aftercare goals, never-mind anything in-between. Practitioners subscribe to the same stigma you face on the outside. And while the fear of being patronized keeps you in line during your treatment, it doesn't arm you with the necessary tools to live self-sufficiently after discharge. At Westwind, I was treated like a person with the problem of addiction, not an addict. That's an important distinction, and it's hard to find. The staff have managed to foster a real sense of community among patients - also hard to find. Kiinicki, who single-handedly coordinates the night track program, made us all feel like we had something worthy to contribute. They knew each patient beyond just our names - they took an active interest in our lives and encouraged vulnerability. I am naturally guarded, perhaps because of my extensive treatment history, but Kiinicki made me feel comfortable enough to start opening up. They applauded my progress week over week. I felt seen for the first time in a long time. I didn't expect to get all that I did out of Westwind. I came in jaded, but between Kiinicki and my therapist, Maia, I didn't want to leave by the end. Both of these amazing, empathetic people helped me to see my potential. They listened to my opinions. They encouraged me to participate in my own recovery, and they tailored their approach to meet my needs. I can't say enough about how grateful I am for these two. If you have the privilege of attending Westwind's night track IOP program, Kiinicki WILL have your back. Maia's groups will have you thinking and acting differently. You'll continue to feel supported even after you leave. I cannot recommend Westwind enough (as long as Kiinicki and Maia are still there, holding down the fort!).
